Disputed origins

The exact origin of blackjack is still a mystery today, and many researchers are debating where and who invented this game. There is no clear record of the origin of blackjack in history and it is probably lost in the sand of time. The game was suddenly evolved in the progressing years into the game that we know of today.

There is a theory that the blackjack that we know today was invented by the Ancient Romans. In their pastimes, they played this game using wooden blocks painted or carved with numbers and gamble using their money.

The most popular earlier iteration of blackjack is called Vingt-et-Un which roughly means twenty-one in French. This game was popular in the gambling salons in France and is also being played in the French Royal Court during the time of King Louis XV.

Other earlier European card games probably influenced the Vingt-et-Un albeit with different rules and names. The Spanish people have a card game called Trent-un which means thirty-one, the Italians have Sette e Mezzo translated as Seven and a Half, and the French have Quinze which means 15.

A new home

The game Vingt-et-Un made its way into American soil in the 18th century with the French settlers. At this point, the popularity of this game dwindled in Europe, and found a new home in America where it was renamed 21. The new game also has different rules from its European origin.

The game became popular across the US and incarnated into what we know today as blackjack. Before this game made its way into the online casino we know today, the game was popular in the legalized gambling halls in New Orleans in 1890.

The legend of Eleanor Dumont a.k.a Madame Mustache is known to blackjack player communities. She was a French settler in the US and is known for her skills in card dealing. She travels from place to place earning her a living by being undefeatable and eventually opened her casino in Nevada named after the original European name of the game.

The rise of casinos

In 1931, blackjack became popular in the legalized casinos in Nevada where the name blackjack was permanently branded to the game. The rules in playing this game were changed by the Nevada Gaming Commission and it is still used today.

Many theorists and mathematicians claim to beat the system of this game by card-counting. In the progressive years, many books were published about card-counting that became the bible of players who wanted to gain an advantage to the house edge but many casinos prevented these by increasing the number of decks used.

The beginning of online blackjack

Card-counting became less popular with the advent of the internet and this is the time where blackjack was incorporated into the roster of games being offered by online casinos. Live casinos also became apparent but earlier operations used a low-quality camera setup. Today, a lot of live casinos use high-definition cameras in a built-in studio-specific for online blackjack
